ASTM International recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI). The MOU was signed by Anthea Ishmael, director, BNSI, and James Thomas, president, ASTM.
“This memorandum of understanding provides easier access to relevant standards and allows for the participation of our stakeholders in the ASTM standards development process,” says Ishmael, who also serves as chairperson of a 15-member regional body (CROSQ) focused on promoting trade and development through quality and standards-related efforts.
BNSI was established in 1973 as a joint venture between the government of Barbados and the country’s private sector. As one of its primary functions, the institution prepares, promotes and implements standards in all sectors of the Barbados economy. BNSI consists of administrative offices as well as a laboratory complex.
Thomas says, “We are pleased to work with Barbados to provide our standards as an effective and current technical resource to help develop Barbados’ standards that support health, safety, the environment and economic growth.”
The ASTM MOU program was launched in 2001 to promote communication between ASTM and national standards bodies worldwide, fostering awareness of the standardization systems of all parties involved. For more information, visit www.astm.org/GLOBAL.
