ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock gave the 2005 Woodland G. Shockley Memorial Award to Gary N. Durham, Ph.D., president of Durham Geo - Slope Indicator in Stone Mountain, Ga. Committee D18 cited Durham for his "exceptional and long term meritorious service to the activities of Committee D18."

Durham has been an ASTM International member since 1971; he serves as vice chairman of the main D18 committee and he also works on several D18 subcommittees. Outside ASTM International, he is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Involved in manufacturing products for various segments of the geotechnical industry since 1988, Durham has also spent many years as a practicing geotechnical engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Waterways Experiment Station, for electric utilities, and in private practice.

Durham holds a B.S.C.E. from the University of Alabama, a B.S.M.S. in geotechnical engineering from Mississippi State University, an M.B.A. from the University of Alabama, and a Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from Oklahoma State University.
