ASTM International’s committee on soil and rock (D18) has honored six researchers with the C. A. Hogentogler Award. This award is given in recognition of a paper of outstanding merit on soils for engineering purposes. This year the award recognizes the contribution of a research team from The Centre for Offshore Foundations Systems at The University of Western Australia, for their 2016 Geotechnical Testing Journal paper entitled ‘In Situ Measurement of the Dynamic Penetration of Free-Fall Projectiles in Soft Soils Using a Low-Cost Inertial Measurement Unit.’

Anthony Blake is a research fellow at the University of Southampton in Southampton, Great Britain. He received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Institute of Technology, Sligo, Ireland, and his Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from the University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia. In addition to ASTM, Blake is an active member of the British Geotechnical Association.

Conleth O’Loughlin is an associate professor at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia. He received his Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. O’Loughlin serves on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Physical Modelling in Geotechnics.

John Morton is a senior engineer at Nijhuis Industries in Truro, Great Britain. He received his Bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, and his Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from the University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia. Morton is a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers (UK).

Colm O’Beirne is a project geotechnical engineer at CMW Geosciences in Auckland, New Zealand.  He received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the National University of Ireland, Galway and his Ph.D. in offshore geotechnical engineering from the University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia.

Christophe Gaudin is a professor at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia. Gaudin received his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from Ecole Centrale de Nantes, Nantes, France. He is a member of the editorial committee of ICE Géotechnique Letters.

David White is a professor at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia. White has been an ASTM International member since 2013. He received his master’s in geotechnical engineering and Ph.D. in engineering from Cambridge University in 2002. In addition to ASTM, White is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Engineers Australia, Royal Institute of Naval Architects, and Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
