Barbara Andree, forensic chemist at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) at the ATF Forensic Science Laboratory in Walnut Creek, Calif., has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee E30 on Forensic Sciences.
Committee E30 includes more than 700 members who develop ASTM International standards for forensic sciences, including criminalistics, questioned documents, forensic engineering, fire debris analysis, drug testing analysis, and collection and preservation of physical evidence. Formed in 1970, E30 currently oversees more than 60 published standards and has several new standards in development. A member of ASTM International since 2004, Andree also chairs Subcommittee E30.11 on Interdisciplinary Forensic Science Standards.
Andree’s professional career has included work in general trace evidence, including paint, fire debris and gunshot residue, as well as analysis of explosives, explosives residues and device componentry. She was a crime lab analyst at the Wisconsin Department of Justice and the Northern Virginia Forensic Laboratory before joining the ATF Forensic Science Laboratory in 1995.
A graduate of Northeastern University, Boston, Mass., where she received a master’s degree in forensic chemistry, Andree also holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass. She is a diplomat on the American Board of Criminalistics and a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the Northwestern Association of Forensic Scientists in addition to ASTM.
