Recently, ASTM International’s Exo Technology Center of Excellence debuted its new podcast, The Following Seas, produced in collaboration with the United States Navy’s Office of Naval Research.
The podcast is hosted by ET CoE staff Bill Billotte and Nora Nimmerichter. It will consist of 24 podcasts annually over three years, highlighting various innovative technologies and their real-world applications. Guests will include members of the US Navy, both military and civilian, along with contractors, grant workers, and more.
The Following Seas aims to educate the latest generation of STEM students and emerging professionals on how they can get involved in overcoming the Navy’s specific design challenges. For example, traditional technologies developed on land must often be re-engineered to work in unpredictable marine conditions. Topic areas will include nuclear propulsion, robotics, exoskeletons, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and many others.
Billotte says that the larger goal of the podcast is to reach young people in society outside the Navy, to give them a sense of how they can get involved beyond enlisting.
“The Following Seas is a way to open the eyes of students all over the world about how STEM can let them make a positive impact,” says Billotte. “The U.S. Navy operates from seabed to space tackling wicked technical problems, so they are a natural source of inspiration for young minds looking for a challenge. I am excited to be a part of increasing the talent pool of future technical experts, scientists, engineers, standards developers, and many more exciting careers that will benefit the Navy, and ultimately the world.”
