Anthony W. Thornton is director of product integrity and performance and a senior product scientist for Micromeritics Instrument Corp., Norcross, Ga., has been elected to serve a three-year term on the ASTM International board of directors

An ASTM International fellow and Award of Merit recipient for his contributions to Committee B09 on Metal Powders and Metal Powder Products, Thornton currently serves as B09’s first vice chairman and as chairman of three B09 subcommittees: B09.01 on Nomenclature and Technical Data, B09.92 on Awards and B09.98 on Planning. He also chairs  Subcommittee C21.04 on Raw Materials, part of Committee C21 on Ceramic Whitewares and Related Products; and Subcommittee E29.02 on Non-Sieving Methods, part of Committee E29 on Particle and Spray Characterization; and he is membership secretary of Committee E56 on Nanotechnology. In addition, he is a member of Committees C01 on Cement, C07 on Lime, C28 on Advanced Ceramics, D11 on Rubber, D20 on Plastics, D24 on Carbon Black and the Committee on Standards. He was honored with a B09 Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and an E29 Award of Appreciation in 2002. Thornton has been involved in ASTM International work since 1987.

At Micromeritics, a developer and manufacturer of instruments used for materials science, Thornton’s responsibilities include ensuring that all new products and updates meet customer requirement specifications and that product development procedures are followed. He also provides product applications and operational support, delivers technical training, represents his company in standards development groups and participates in product development performance testing.

After earning his B.S. in chemistry and M.S. in analytical chemistry from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., Thornton joined the Micromeritics staff as a research chemist in 1980. He became a technical specialist at the company in 1984, a laboratory manager in 1987, and a training manager in 1995. He assumed his senior product scientist position in 2000 and his director position in 2009.

In addition to his ASTM International, Thornton is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Catalysis Society of South Africa, the International Adsorption Society and the International Organization for Standardization.
