ASTM International has approved a new standard that will fill a gap in the waste plastic process oil (WPPO) industry (D8577).
The new standard was developed by the recycled products subcommittee (D02.P0), part of ASTM’s petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants committee (D02).
According to ASTM member Jean-François Borny, there has been a lot of work toward being able to utilize mixed WPPOs as a solution.
“This guide is the first step toward unification of the analytical testing needed to analyze WPPO,” says Borny, Global Analytical Services Senior Manager at Lummus Technology. “In a world that must do a better job in reusing the excess waste plastic, we must have a consensus on how to analyze the resulting products from processed mixed waste plastics feeds. This gives WPPO the potential to be reused for multiple fuel needs and other recyclables, and helping us become a greener world.”
