ASTM International has approved a new standard intended to serve as a useful guide to help individuals understand the severity of muscle injuries (F3645).
F3645 was developed by the assessment for TEMPs subcommittee (F04.44), part of ASTM’s medical and surgical materials and devices committee (F04).
According to ASTM member Michael J. McClure, standards need to be developed in the area of tissue-engineered medical products. This is a newer area that needs established standards that people can rely on as guides for product development.
“This is a new standard that provides evaluation guidelines to assess skeletal muscle injuries, notably those that involve volumetric muscle loss,” says McClure. “These types of injuries result in the loss of force-producing muscle fibers, and the degree of this loss is an important criterion to measure.”
McClure adds that as new standards are developed for tissue-engineered medical products, we will need to ensure those standards are updated to maintain pace with technology.
This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3 on good health and well-being.
