ASTM International’s magnetic properties committee (A06) is developing a proposed standard that will explain how to measure the pull force of magnets. The proposed standard (WK70439) will also detail variables that might affect pull force measurement.
Member Michael Devine notes that many industries have their own proprietary method for pull testing, which can produce wildly different values.
“Many applications rely on a magnet assembly to produce the minimum amount of pull force, but there is no standard way to measure it”, says Devine, director of technology, Adams Magnetic Products. “Any company, application, or industry that relies on pull force from magnetic assemblies will benefit from this. The proposed standard would minimize or eliminate uncertainty and variations in pull test results.”
Devine invites anybody who relies on magnet assemblies producing pull force to join in the development of the proposed standard.
“It would be best to learn how various industries test and/or validate their designs,” says Devine.
