ASTM International's subcommittee on safety standards for lighters (F15.02) recently approved the formation of two new task groups to work on the development of new standards for lighters. The subcommittee is part of ASTM’s consumer products committee (F15).
The first task group will look at the development of a safety standard for flameless-type lighters that create an arc and do not generate a flame, often referred to as rechargeable utility lighters. These products are powered by a rechargeable battery, which creates heat, allowing for something to be lit.
The second task group will work on the development of a safety standard for torch lighters and micro-torch-type products that include a jet flame/blue flame. These products have reportedly been used in a variety of ways, such as for cigars, cannabis, and crafts. Reports of fire incidents with these products are the basis for the development of this new safety standard.
The subcommittee is looking for interested stakeholders to participate, particularly manufacturers of these types of products.
