ASTM International’s human resource management committee (E63) is developing a proposed standard that will focus on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the recruitment and hiring process to help create modern hiring standards. The proposed standard (WK91420) will include equitable practices that eliminate bias and focus on hiring for capability and testing for behavioral tendencies within the workplace.
“The goal of the proposed standard is to blend knowledge, capability, and humanity to create an efficient, effective, emotionally literate, and measurable interview and hiring process,” says Sonia Johnson, chair of E63’s employee relations standard creation group.
Johnson further notes, “Organizations involved in hiring, particularly those that heavily rely on AI for candidate selection and interview questions, will want to adhere to the proposed standard. By following these guidelines, organizations can mitigate bias and discrimination, while ensuring the reliability of their AI systems.”
According to Johnson, the proposed guide will create standards for AI hiring processes to ensure compliance with legal requirements and to prevent any biased selection procedures. The proposed standard will help to mitigate risks associated with AI-driven recruitment but will also contribute to building a strong and experienced workforce for employers.
“The job market is being complicated by data, and sometimes unsubstantiated claims of the efficacy or ineffectiveness of using AI in hiring processes,” says Johnson, who is the director of employee relations and human resources at The Society for Employee Relations. “Creating uniform hiring standards will make it easier to use AI, and create an effective auditing process for all AI hiring work, from drafting the role, to selecting candidates, to providing question for interviewing them.”
Johnson notes that dedicated individuals who are passionate about transforming and redefining hiring standards in the workplace are encouraged to join E63 in developing WK91420 and other proposed standards.
ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Join ASTM.
