The proposed standard aims to make asphalt mixture testing less complex.

Jun 24, 2025

ASTM International’s road and paving materials committee (D04) is developing a new standard (WK95270) that will present an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted method for performing the dynamic modulus (E*) mixture test. This test is an important component in pavement design.

WK95270 is being developed by the fundamental/mechanistic tests subcommittee (D04.26), part of the D04 committee.

According to ASTM member Richard Steger, the proposed standard uses a modified version of ASTM’s standard test method for determination of cracking tolerance index of asphalt mixture using the indirect tensile cracking test at intermediate temperature (D8225).

“In short, generating test data for dynamic modulus is difficult; generating test data for the modified ASTM D8225 test is relatively easy,” says Steger, platform leader, Asphalt Materials and Sustainability. “AI and neural networks allow us the ability to connect the two methods.”

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure.
