A proposed revision to an ASTM International impact-attenuation standard aims to reduce the hardness of synthetic turf fields.

The revision to the specification for impact attenuation of turf playing systems as measured in the field (F1936) seeks to reduce the maximum “g-max” score, which measures a field's hardness.

The existing standard was developed by ASTM International’s committee on sports equipment, playing surfaces, and facilities (F08). The standard sets the current g-max score maximum at 200. The revision proposes a lower threshold to reduce the risk of impact injuries.
