Student Project Grant Applications Due Oct. 31

ASTM International offers a limited number of $500 grants to university students to help with student design projects that contain an ASTM International standards component. ASTM will post the results as a student standards application paper on the ASTM website.

Recognizing that students at some universities may need financial assistance in completing their graduate or senior capstone design projects and that the overall demonstration of the existence and understanding of industry standards and applicability to engineering is required, interested students should consider applying.

For the application, student(s) must submit an abstract summary describing the project that includes:

• Summarizing the project goal
• Listing the ASTM standards that are being considered to achieve the project goal
• Writing a declaration of intention to submit an application paper for publication by ASTM International on completion of the project
• A statement of endorsement from a faculty mentor

Professor of the Year Nominations Now Being Accepted

ASTM International is currently accepting nominations for the 2024 Professor of the Year award. The deadline for submissions is Aug. 31.

Established in 2009, the goal of the Professor of the Year Award is to reward professors who introduce students to standards and encourage their use. The award is given to an educator, professor, or teacher at an accredited university who uses ASTM standards in the curriculum or classroom.

Professor of the Year winners receive an honorarium in the amount of $2,000. The university of the award winner will also receive a $2,000 honorarium.

ANSI 2024 Paper Competition Theme is Artificial Intelligence

June 7 is the deadline to submit a paper for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 2024 paper competition. This year’s theme asks “What role do or could standards play in safe and effective implementation of artificial intelligence applications/systems?”

The paper competition is open to students enrolled full- or part-time in associate, undergraduate, or graduate programs during the period of September 2023 to June 2024 in U.S. higher education institutions. A cash prize of $2,000 will be given to the first place winner, and a cash prize of $1,000 will be given to the second place winner. ANSI reserves the right to award no prizes based on the determination of the judges. All entries will receive a certificate from ANSI recognizing the submission of the paper. Winning papers will be published on ANSI.org and potentially in other media outlets.

ASTM Announces Mary Norton Award Winner

ASTM International’s metallography committee (E04) has awarded the 2024 Mary R. Norton Memorial Scholarship Award for Women to Aasha Zinke at Rice University in Houston, Texas. Zinke will be formally recognized at the E04 meeting during ASTM’s May Committee Week in Philadelphia.

Zinke is an undergraduate senior, majoring in materials science and nanoengineering, with a minor in global health technologies. Zinke is concurrently pursuing her professional master’s degree in materials science and nanotechnology as she is finishing her bachelor’s degree.

The committee on metallography (E04) sponsors the Norton Scholarship to encourage women undergraduate seniors or first-year graduate students to pursue the study of physical metallurgy or materials science with an emphasis on the relationship of microstructure to material properties.
