A new ASTM International standard seeks to coordinate terminology relating to microphysiological systems. The standard, soon to be published as F3570, was developed by ASTM’s committee on medical and surgical materials and devices (F04).

Microphysiological system (MPS) models simulate the physiologic activities of organs and organ systems at the microscale, and use of this technology can ease the study of the systems themselves and new therapies within a lab setting.

According to ASTM International member Katie Zander, Ph.D., this standard and others like it will ease cooperation involving MPS. “The standardization of the language used to describe and discuss MPS will ease communication between the stakeholders in this space. Using standard terminology allows different labs and companies clarity within their collaborations. It can also lower hurdles for new applications of MPS,” says Zander.

Zander says that the standard will prove helpful to manufacturers, laboratories, academics, and other entities that use MPS in their work. F3570 is one of several standards being developed around MPS in collaboration with the Standards Coordinating Body.

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3, health.
