ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants has presented the Sydney D. Andrews Award of Achievement to Fred W. Girshick, Ph.D., senior technology advisor, large engine lubricants, at Infineum USA L.P. in Linden, N.J. Girshick received the award in honor of his outstanding achievement in the field of petroleum products and lubricants.

In his more than 30 years of working with engine oils, Girshick has formulated products for passenger car, heavy duty, aviation, marine, railroad and natural gas engines; conducted basic and applied research on rheology and engine oil performance; provided direct customer support as well as technical support to base stock refineries; and conducted field tests.  He began his career at Exxon Research and Engineering Co. in Linden, N.J., in 1980, and worked in positions of increasing responsibility, including principal scientist, group leader and senior staff chemist, until 1999. That year, he accepted the position of HD formulation leader at Infineum. He became senior technologist in 2000 and senior technology advisor in 2004.

A graduate of Princeton University, Princeton, N.J., where he earned an M.A. in chemistry and his Ph.D. in nuclear chemistry, Girshick also holds a B.S. in chemistry and mathematics from Brooklyn College, New York, N.Y., and an M.S. in statistics from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J.

An active member of ASTM International and Committee D02 since 1982, Girshick currently serves as a D02 member at large and is secretary of Subcommittee D02.07 on Flow Properties. He received the ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from D02 in 2002. The Award of Merit is the highest ASTM honor for individual contributions to standards activities. He also received a D02 Award of Appreciation in 1996 and the Award of Excellence twice, in 1999 and 2005.

Girshick’s professional memberships outside ASTM International include the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the American Statistical Association, SAE International, the Locomotive Maintenance Officers Association and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society.
