ASTM International has continued its support of Riverbend Environmental Education Center in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania.  Riverbend brings students directly into nature and incorporates their current science lessons to encourage a greater appreciation for the outdoors. On June 5, as part of the Outreach to Children/Access to Nature (OCAN) program, first grade students from Bridgeport Elementary School were able to get up close and personal with wildlife.

Erin McCool, director of education and strategic initiatives at Riverbend, said she is proud of the work her organization has done to enhance the academic experience of students in Upper Merion School District, Norristown School District, and Colonial School District. “I am thrilled each year to hear the sounds of children having fun and exploring the preserve. Riverbend is a beautiful preserve, and it literally comes to life when children visit. I am proud of the longstanding partnership and how that has built environmental literacy and connection to thousands of children in our region.”

As an organization that supports environmental standards and sustainability on a global scale, ASTM International also supports local entities aligned with its values, such as Riverbend, which uses direct environmental contact to improve the children’s well-being, education, and leadership skills. The 30-acre preserve provides many ways for students to interact with the environment and gain a deeper understanding and retention of lessons they learn in the classroom. Through a three-part, nature-based STEM series, students from 1st through 4th grade gain a unique scientific experience. Riverbend states that according to a growing body of research, students are reported to perform better on standardized tests in science after spending time in nature.
