John A. Mitchell, Ph.D., principal consultant, Wordsmith Scientific & Regulatory LLC, in Bozeman, Montana, has received the Chip Collins Award from ASTM International Committee E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials and Alternative Control Agents.

Mitchell, who chairs Subcommittee E35.15 on Antimicrobial Agents, was recognized for his strong commitment to the development of international test methods in this sector. The committee also noted his exceptional leadership skills as a mentor to new ASTM members. An ASTM member since 1997, Mitchell also works on Committees D11 on Rubber and D22 on Air Quality.

A broadly-trained clinical microbiologist, Mitchell has specialized in zoonotic disease, wildlife biology and medical microbiology. He has served in related roles at BioScience Laboratories Inc. in Bozeman and at St. Patrick Hospital and Craighead Wildlife-Wildlands Institute in Missoula, Montana. He has also held teaching positions at the University of Montana, Montana State University, and Pacific University. Mitchell has served primarily as a consultant since 2013, assisting in the design of studies for testing of topical antimicrobials or disinfectants intended for submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or the Environmental Protection Agency.

Mitchell holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology (wildlife) from Oklahoma State University and received his doctorate in zoology/microbiology from the University of Montana. He is a member of several groups outside ASTM, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Microbiology, Montana Peregrine Institute, Phi Sigma Society and Sigma Xi Society.
