Markus Heinimann, Ph.D., technology manager – aerospace at Alcoa Technical Center, Alcoa Center, Pa., has received the ASTM International Award of Merit from Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture.

Committee E08 honored Heinimann for his “exceptional and sustained technical and leadership contributions, in particular to the advancement and application of fracture mechanics technologies for structural integrity and reliability in the aerospace industry.” The Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities. 

A member of ASTM International since 1996, Heinimann works on several E08 subcommittees and is chairman of E08.04 on Structural Applications. He won his first ASTM award – the E08 Best Student Paper Award – in 1997, and since then has worked hard to promote ASTM to young members and increase student participation. To that end, he has organized and chaired the annual E08 Student Presentation Forum on three occasions and founded the ASTM E08 Student Chapter at Purdue University. He has also received the Keith J. Miller Young Investigator Award and an Award of Appreciation from E08, and serves on the editorial board of the ASTM Journal of Testing and Evaluation.

Heinimann specializes in aircraft structural design, analysis and materials. He joined Alcoa in 2002 as a senior technical specialist in aerospace product design, became chief design engineer of aerospace structures in 2007 and assumed his current role in 2012. Prior to Alcoa, he was group leader, durability and damage tolerance, at Cessna Aircraft Co., Wichita, Kan.

Outside ASTM International Heinimann is a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, ASM International (formerly the American Society for Metals), the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Society of Automotive Engineers. He holds a doctorate, a master’s and bachelor’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics from Purdue University, where he received the Outstanding Aerospace Engineer Award in 2008.
