ASTM International Committee E10 on Nuclear Technology and Applications has presented the Award of Merit to Randy Nanstad, Ph.D., distinguished research staff member in the Materials Science and Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.
Committee E10 noted Nanstad’s exceptional service, including his extensive technical contributions to standards development, task group leadership and symposium leadership as an ASTM member since 1976. He has been honored with two Awards of Appreciation and the E10 Peter D. Hedgecock Award during his tenure. As a regular contributor and leader of ASTM symposia, Nanstad has edited and authored more than 30 ASTM special technical papers and publications. He also serves on Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he received a bachelor’s degree in engineering, Nanstad earned his master’s in nuclear engineering and doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Nanstad has served as a researcher and group leader for the Fracture Mechanics Group and the Nuclear Materials Science and Technology Group since joining Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1981. In his current role, which he assumed in 2013, he serves as task leader for the Reactor Pressure Vessel Task of the U.S. Department of Energy Light-Water Reactor Sustainability Program, and is principal investigator for a DOE program on advanced structural materials.
In addition to ASTM, Nanstad is also a fellow of the American Nuclear Society and ASM International and a member of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society. He has been an author or co-author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and technical reports, primarily dealing with understanding the fracture behavior and the effects of radiation on structural materials. Nanstad received the ORNL Distinguished Engineer Award in 2013.
