The test method aims to measure the properties of oil for environmental modeling.

Jul 10, 2025

ASTM International is developing a standard (WK92298) that will provide a procedure to measure the rate of evaporation of oil over time and with temperature.

The proposed standard is being developed by the surveillance and tracking subcommittee (F20.16) within ASTM’s hazardous substances and oil spill response committee (F20).

According to ASTM member Mervin Fingas, this proposed standard will be useful to laboratories and their personnel who measure the properties of oil for environmental modeling purposes.

“The standard is based on more than 20 years of experimentation," says Fingas. “The revision is a result of the review by the committee intended to clarify the standard.”

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #7 on affordable and clean energy.

ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN.
