The guide aims to helps communities and stakeholders use common terms for environmental justice and climate resilience.

Aug 15, 2025

ASTM International has approved a new standard that will help communities develop an understanding of the vocabulary used to plan for adaptation to changing climate (E3360).

The new standard was developed by the climate and community subcommittee (E50.07), part of ASTM’s environmental assessment, risk management and corrective action committee (E50).

According to ASTM member Helen Waldorf, this guide will allow stakeholders to use common terms for environmental justice and resilience to climate impacts.

Waldorf adds that this guide includes terms on developing adaptive capacity and management of local responses to financial impacts, greenhouse gas emissions, and extreme weather vulnerability.

“The guide may be used by community groups to talk about proposals from government agencies, local boards and consultants to build responses to a changing climate,” says Waldorf, environmental manager, retired, MA DEP. “We would like to have more participation in the climate and community subcommittee from municipalities, counties, community colleges, as well as state agencies.”
