A new ASTM International standard aims to provide a needed set of practices for infrastructure management. ASTM International’s asset management committee (E53) has developed the standard, which will soon be published as E3210.

According to ASTM International member Marty Rowland, the new standard will help elected officials or executives of cities or counties determine effective ways of measuring success, improving services, and financing improvements.

“The practical application of the standard would typically be with administrators of cities or counties that wish to live up to their reputation of running organizations with transparency and accountability,” says Rowland, senior fellow, Asset Leadership Network. “The standard would help with this process by engaging with those who receive services such as water supply, police protection, parks and recreation, and transit and solicit their input.”

Rowland says that executives of organizations that supply infrastructure services, and those receiving those services, will be the most likely users of the new standard.

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure. 

The sustainable property management subcommittee that developed the new standard invites anyone to help develop proposed standards that will provide guidance on accurately scoring an organization’s infrastructure.
