ASTM International relies on its volunteer members to create world-class consensus standards, which is why ASTM offers various training opportunities for those members. By attending these trainings, members can improve their understanding of the process of developing and revising of standards, balloting, the use of electronic tools, and more. Below is an overview of some trainings that ASTM offers, both virtually and live on-site at committee weeks.
Committee week attendees are invited to a welcome and orientation session. This session will provide a brief introduction to ASTM, its process electronic tools, and international activities. This is an interactive session, and questions are encouraged as attendees should feel comfortable in participating at their standards meetings. Facilitated by ASTM staff, this session provides new and experienced members and visitors a chance to connect at the beginning of committee week.
This session informs members how to effectively move documents through the balloting process, from initiating a subcommittee ballot through the main committee and society review. A review of the role of the Committee on Standards (COS) is included. In addition, this training teaches how to get a positive result from negative votes. Special focus is given to the procedural handling of negative votes throughout the balloting process.
This editorial training module will follow both new and revised standards to publication. The module will cover the key roles of your editor and the standard’s technical contact in the writing, revising, and balloting of your standard until it is approved and published, as well as providing a review of ASTM’s tools that help with the process. Included in the module will be a brief review of work item registration and the three stages of balloting.
This module is designed to familiarize members with the ILS Program, its features, benefits, capabilities, and the online registration process. Research reports will also be specifically addressed during the session. This workshop will benefit anyone planning to run (or participate in) an interlaboratory study to generate a precision statement for a new or existing ASTM test method.
These trainings are made available for members so they can utilize their expertise and maximize their contribution to the standards-development process. ASTM staff are always available for questions about training, and more information about trainings and scheduled workshops is available at https://www.astm.org/membership-participation/member-tools/member-training. ●
