A new ASTM International standard will serve as a guide for standards related to determining the effects of biogenic sulfuric acid on concrete products. ASTM’s concrete pipe committee approved the standard, which is soon to be published as C1894.

According to ASTM International member Mel Marshall, the new standard fills the need for a guide that discusses microbially induced corrosion (MIC) of concrete products and laboratory test methods for determining the resistance of concrete to MIC.

Agencies, specifiers, admix suppliers and concrete manufacturers will be the main users of the standard.

Marshall, president of Mel C. Marshall Industrial Consultants, also notes that the subcommittee responsible for the new standard is developing two additional standards for test methods referenced in this new standard. These proposed standards cover the determination of effects of biogenic acidification on concrete antimicrobial additives and/or concrete products (WK69718) and chemical resistance of concrete products to acid attack (WK69719).
