Diamond Aircraft began as a small motor glider manufacturer in the 1980s but evolved into a global leader in the production of light aircraft. Our product line includes popular models such as the DA20, DA40, DA42, and DA62, which are known for composite airframes, advanced avionics, and fuel efficiency. ASTM International provides standards for a common framework to ensure safety, reliability, and interoperability in aircraft design, manufacturing, and operation. For Diamond Aircraft, ASTM standards have been instrumental in harmonizing traditional aviation practices with the demands of sustainable aviation.
The journey toward sustainability in aviation is multifaceted, encompassing new materials, alternative fuels, and electric propulsion systems. ASTM standards provide the technical guidelines and quality benchmarks necessary to navigate these complexities, enabling Diamond Aircraft to innovate without compromising safety or performance.
This commitment to sustainability is evident in the proactive approach to integrating alternative propulsion systems and renewable energy sources into designs. The efforts are anchored by ASTM standards in three key areas:
1) Material Innovation
The use of composite materials has been a hallmark of Diamond Aircraft’s design philosophy. Composites are lightweight, durable, and contribute to significant fuel savings. ASTM standards for composite materials, such as the test method for tensile properties of polymer matrix composite materials (F3039), ensure that these materials meet rigorous performance and safety criteria. This allows us to confidently incorporate advanced composites in the airframes, reducing weight and emissions without compromising structural integrity.
2) Alternative Fuels
Transitioning from conventional aviation fuels to sustainable alternatives like biofuels and synthetic fuels is a critical step in reducing aviation’s carbon footprint. ASTM standards, such as the specification for aviation turbine fuel containing synthesized hydrocarbons (D7566), provide the framework for testing and certifying these new fuel types. Our fleet, particularly diesel-powered models, is already compatible with Jet A and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). This compatibility underscores Diamond Aircraft’s readiness to adapt to a greener future.
3) Electric Propulsion
Electric propulsion represents the cutting edge of sustainable aviation, and Diamond Aircraft is developing electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems for our product lines. ASTM standards, such as the specification for electric propulsion safety and performance (F3239), play a crucial role in ensuring that these new technologies meet stringent aviation requirements. By adhering to these standards, Diamond Aircraft accelerates the development and certification of electric-powered aircraft, paving the way for zero-emission aviation.
The adoption of ASTM standards is not a solitary endeavor. Diamond Aircraft collaborates closely with regulators, industry partners, and research institutions to shape the future of sustainable aviation. For example, the company works with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to align ASTM standards with international certification processes. At the same time, ASTM policies and procedures ensure compliance with all relevant antitrust regulations and policies. Diamond Aircraft actively participates in the committee on general aviation aircraft (F44), in which Diamond staff members have led several standards-development activities. Diamond is also represented in the related aviation committees on light sport aircraft (F37); aircraft systems (F39); and petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants (D02).
