New Specification for 1OOR UNLEADED AVIATION GASOLINE

1. Scope

1.1 This specification1 covers formulating specifications for purchases of aviation gasoline under contract and is intended primarily for use by purchasing agencies and participants in the global supply chain.
1.2 Unleaded aviation gasoline defined by this specification is for use in engines and associated aircraft that are specifically approved by the engine and aircraft manufacturers and/or under appropriate regulatory approvals. This fuel is not considered suitable for use in other engines and associated aircraft.
1.3 This specification, unless otherwise provided, prescribes the required properties of this unleaded aviation gasoline at the time and place of delivery.
1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.6 This international standard was developed in accor- dance with internationally recognized principles on standard- ization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recom- mendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Rationale

A standard specification for an unleaded aviation gasoline containing ethers is proposed, called 100R. Attached to this proposed specification is a two-part ASTM research report.

Research Report (Part-I) contains a complete set of documents pertaining to the fuel properties, fit-for-purpose (Phase I and II), environmental toxicology, storage stability / fuel weathering, and material compatibility requirements for 100R unleaded avgas as defined in the current ASTM D7826 guidance specification. Research Report (Part-II) contains data and summaries from all the FAA-Conforming engine and flight testing required in the FAA certification projects to approve the use of 100R unleaded aviation gasoline in aircraft.

This fuel has undergone extensive testing over the past 7 years and has an independent specification per FAA’s Advisory Circular AC-20-24-D, accepted by the FAA’s Central Certification Office on July 7th, 2022, designated as Swift SPEC-100R. This specification was utilized in the testing outlined herein as well as the FAA STC Certification Program for 100R. This company specification (Swift SPEC-100R) serves as the basis for this proposed production specification on this ballot and has identical properties compared to the previously FAA-Accepted independent specification on which all the above tests were conducted, and approvals received.

Swift Fuels established our 100R task force in June 2017 and since that time has regularly shared results of the testing and progress with the task force members. Over the past year, Swift has presented working copies of each of these items to the task force to consider and provide comments. After careful consideration, in June 2024 the task force unanimously recommended these items be put to ballot, as one single item accompanied by our proposed production specification.

The motion to ballot was approved by Subcommittee J in June 2024, at the semi-annual meeting in Austin, TX.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
