New Test Method for Determining Side Force Friction on Paved Surfaces Using a Tire at 20 Degrees to Measure Sideway Force Coefficient (SFC)

1. Scope

This test method covers the measurement of the side force friction of paved surfaces using a tire mounted at 20 degrees, herein referred to as the “Device”.

Keywords

side force friction, sideway force coefficient, continuous friction, pavement friction

Rationale

Continuous friction measuring equipment (CFME) is commonly used to manage airfield pavements, but rarely applied in the highway field in the United States. The 20-degree sideway force device described in this draft standard is one CFME with which there is substantial international experience with highway testing, experience that now includes limited use in the United States.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
