New Test Method for Shoulder Exoskeleton Assessment using Electromyography

1. Scope

The purpose of this test method is to quantitatively evaluate how a shoulder exoskeleton (see Terminology F3323) affects upper body muscle activation and fatigue during postures and movements with elevated upper arm postures.

Keywords

Fatigue, Muscle, Exoskeleton, Electromyography, EMG, Upper Extremity, Shoulder, Industrial

Rationale

Initially, Exoskeletons are often initially tested in controlled lab settings and if successful, may progress to testing in ‘real world’ field settings. This test method specifies setup, analysis, and interpretation steps for electromyography (EMG) assessment of shoulder exoskeletons in a lab setting. This test method also offers guidelines for how ‘real-world’ field test results can be setup, analyzed and interpreted using the same workflow as utilized in a lab setting.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
