Currently there are two standards for HFRR lubricity D7688: Visual methodD6079: Referee method which uses a digital camera to measure and record the wear scar The D7688 standard is being balloted for withdrawal. D6079 has improved precision compared to D7688 The diesel fuel lubricity task force unanimously agreed that the D7688 method should be withdrawn and replaced with D6079. Having two test methods with different precision statements can lead to confusion. In all test methods ASTM is obliged to strive for the best possible precision. D7688 was first published approximately 10 years ago with the intention to drop the less precise visual method in the future, thereby allowing users time to adjust to the new technology.
