New Guide for Selecting Sensory Discrimination Methods

1. Scope

Scope 1.1 This guide provides recommendations for selecting and planning sensory discrimination tests, as well as interpreting the results from these tests. 1.2 Standard testing procedures are reviewed and recommendations provided as to when to use which procedure(s) based on business objective(s). 1.3 Discussions on risk determination, product properties, test parameters and logistics are presented based on project goals and test objectives. 1.4 References to best practices for executing particular procedures are provided. 1.5 Guidance is provided as to meaningful interpretation of sensory difference testing results, including a discussion of consumer relevance. 1.6 Units - The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.7 This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
