New Practice for Residual Stress in Structural Design and Sustainment

1. Scope

This task group will establish an ASTM Guide describing best practices for incorporating residual stresses into the design of metallic structure and the lifing processes required during structural sustainment. Both manufacturing induced and engineered residual stresses will be considered. Topics to be addressed include: sizing residually stressed structural members and calculating factors/margins of safety; methods for measuring residual stresses and determining their associated uncertainties; incorporating residual stresses into durability and damage tolerant calculations; and the effects of residual stresses on non-destructive inspection techniques.

Rationale

Residual stresses influence the material and structural behavior of every structure. Establishing a community best practice for accounting for them in design and sustainment is a necessary step. This best practice is of interest to government and industry in equal measure.
