New Test Method for Preparation and Reporting of Results for Water Vapor Transmission Property Testing of Preformed Pipe Insulation

1. Scope

1.1 This test method is for the preparation of specimens for the evaluation of water vapor transmission properties of cylindrical insulation materials or systems that are used to insulate pipe and tubing. 1.2 This test method provides instructions for the preparation of test specimens of homogeneous or multiple-component cylindrical specimens for subsequent testing per Test methods E96 to determine the water vapor permeance (permeance) of those assemblies in laboratory settings. 1.3 Permeability is determined for homogeneous materials with a wall thickness greater than or equal to 0.5 in. only. 1.4 This test method provides requirements for the contents of reports for which this test method is applied. 1.5 Cylindrical specimens prepared with this test method are tested using the Test Methods E96 desiccant method only. 1.6 Units--The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Rationale

It has been determined that an ASTM standard describing the procedure for preparing cylindrical specimen for testing according to Test Methods E96 is needed. The bulk of the requirements from Test Methods E96 are retained, and this test method provides the steps and calculations to determine the water vapor transmission. Homogeneous and non-homogeneous specimens are covered.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
