New Test Method for Standard Test Method for Using Temperature Rise as an Indication of Relative Time of Setting of Cementitious Mixtures

1. Scope

1.1 This test method uses temperature measurement to provide an economical approach for comparing the relative times of setting of cementitious materials undergoing similar curing conditions. The relative difference in time to achieve a fraction of the temperature rise is an indicator of relative time of setting. This test method is not intended to replace penetration resistance methods such as Test Method C403/C403M. It can be applied to compare a limited number of conditions for which the microstructural aspects remain relatively constant, for example, comparing different binder combinations and admixture dosages. 1.2 Units- The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. WARNING--Fresh hydraulic cementitious mixtures are caustic and may cause chemical burns to skin and tissue upon prolonged exposure.

Keywords

fraction of temperature rise time; temperature measurement; setting time; early-age hydration

Rationale

This test method uses easily collected thermal data from cementitious mixtures such as concrete or sieved mortar to approximate and compare the relative times of setting under similar curing conditions. It is not necessarily intended to replace the C403 method or other penetration resistance methods or reproduce results obtained using those methods, but it may be an acceptable alternative for many applications and users.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
