This report covers key discussions and findings of a recent workshop focused on how standards facilitate the transition toward a more circular economy for textiles.
The workshop examined the need for documentary standards and identified several areas where standards would be helpful, including terminology; sorting and grading; recycling; design for circularity; labeling; and digital product passports.
It concludes with recommendations for the next steps and a proposed roadmap to begin developing the identified standards to enable circular textiles.

This report presents key outcomes from this ASTM International and NIST workshop. It also features feedback from the proceeding survey on Manufacturing in a Circular Economy, and next steps for addressing standards in this area.
In addition to the standards identified, two key takeaways were identified: first, participants have a transformative, though fragmented, vision for a new way of thinking about how we create and use materials that is regenerative rather than extractive. Second, participants are motivated to make this vision come true, and they are indicative of a larger desire across the manufacturing sector to implement circularity.
ASTM International Committee E60 on Sustainability is well-suited to play a part in developing standards that foster a circular economy for manufacturing materials.
