ASTM and ASTRO America Collaborate to Advance Large-Scale Additive Manufacturing
This project to accelerate AFSD will run through December 2027.
ASTM International’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE), a global leader in accelerating standardization and innovation in additive manufacturing (AM), is pleased to announce a strategic collaboration with the Applied Science & Technology Research Organization (ASTRO) of America. This joint initiative aims to support the development and deployment of Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) by advancing standards, quality infrastructure, and best practices for large-scale AM technologies.
The project, titled “Advancement of Process, Materials, Applications, and Test and Evaluation for Large-Scale Additive Manufacturing,” runs from December 2024 through December 2027. It will be delivered in five phases, each targeting specific technical and strategic deliverables to accelerate the adoption and industrialization of AFSD.
“This collaboration reflects our continued commitment to accelerating the industrial readiness of emerging AM technologies through standards, training, and applied R&D,” said Dr. Mohsen Seifi, ASTM’s vice president of global advanced manufacturing programs. “By combining ASTM’s AM CoE expertise with ASTRO’s innovation leadership, we’re enabling a more robust and scalable future for large-scale additive manufacturing.”
Under this collaboration, ASTM AM CoE will lead efforts to:
- Host stakeholder and value chain workshops;
- Develop integrated control plans across equipment, facility, feedstock, and process dimensions;
- Implement a comprehensive Quality Management System (QMS) for Characterization and Metrology (C&M).
The project will also initiate the development of standards for novel Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) methods, QMS workflows, and process specifications related to AFSD. Ideally, this comprehensive approach will yield significant advancements in material qualification, process control, and developing novel NDE methods, ultimately enhancing manufacturing readiness and production quality.
“ASTRO America’s mission is to bridge advanced science and applied technologies and innovation to strengthen U.S. manufacturing,” said Jason Gorey, executive director of ASTRO America. “Working with ASTM’s AM CoE ensures we are not only advancing new technologies like AFSD, but doing so with the rigorous quality frameworks needed for long-term success.”

ASTM Hosts Aviation Fuel Events in Brussels
ASTM International hosted a series of aviation fuel events from April 7-11 in Brussels, Belgium. The schedule included technical meetings, a synthetic aviation turbine fuel (SATF) seminar, and a two-day aviation fuels training program.
The aviation fuels subcommittee (D02.J) covered everything from SATF, to thermal and electrical properties, to jet fuel specifications. Members of D02.J include all major engine and aircraft manufacturers, fuel producers, and regulators from around the world.
The week began with the SATF seminar, which provided a space to learn about new evaluation and specification development needed to advance alternative aviation fuels.
Technical meetings followed. The week concluded with ASTM’s technical training program on aviation fuels, which covered how specifications are used to control the quality of aviation fuels and featured hands-on samples of aviation fuel equipment.
While attending the ASTM aviation fuels meetings, ASTM staff and officers met with Transport and Environment to discuss their impactful advocacy on sustainability in aviation. The conversation focused on reducing non-CO₂ emissions and exploring synergies between standardization efforts on aviation safety and environmental goals.

ASTM Donates to Myanmar Earthquake Relief
ASTM International made a donation through Americares to aid those affected by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that happened in Myanmar on March 28. ASTM has been a memorandum of understanding partner with Myanmar’s Department of Research and Innovation (DRI) since 2016.
