Bryan Ormond of North Carolina State University has been named ASTM International’s 2025 Professor of the Year. Ormond is the associate professor and director of the Textile Protection and Comfort Center at NCS.
Ormond became director of the Textile Protection and Comfort Center earlier this year. In this position, he provides strategic leadership and sets the vision, mission, and long-term objectives while guiding operations and growth in both research and testing related to safety and protection. This role still holds the title of professor, so all duties, including teaching and mentoring of students, are still an active part of the new position.
As noted in a letter of nomination:
“As a world leader in researching personal protective clothing and equipment, Dr. Ormond has a passion for helping our world work better. Dr. Ormond turns his leadership in the protective clothing industry into inspiration for his students and research group. He provides a steadfast example of servant leadership to his graduate student by demonstrating the importance of volunteering his time as the vice chair of the committee on personal protective clothing and equipment (F23) and serving as immediate past chair of the subcommittee on chemical hazards (F23.30).”
Ormond has spent his career at North Carolina State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in polymer and color chemistry in 2007 and a Ph.D. degree in fiber and polymer science in 2012, both from NC State.
The academic outreach pages on ASTM.org have been restored and refreshed. This section of the website includes information that will be useful to students, professors, librarians, and current ASTM members with an interest in academic affairs. New information on the Professor Tool Kit can be found under “For Professors” and a new section on Student Chapters provides a wealth of general information as well as descriptions of current student chapters at Central Philippine University, Florida Institute of Technology, Florida International University, University of Central Lancashire, and the University of Engineering and Technology in Lima.
Please contact Travis Murdock (tmurdock@astm.org), ASTM staff manager, with any questions regarding information found on the Academic Outreach pages.
Applications are currently being accepted for the Mary R. Norton Memorial Scholarship, administered by the metallography committee (E04). The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage women undergraduate seniors or first-year graduate students to purse the study of physical metallurgy or materials science, with an emphasis on the relationship of microstructure to material properties.
Applicants must be registered full-time students and classified as an undergraduate senior or first-year graduate student during the specific academic year covered.
The $1,000 award is intended to be used for educational expenses during the current academic year.
Applications for the Norton Scholarship are due on December 15, 2025. For more information, contact ASTM staff manager Travis Murdock (tmurdock@astm.org).
