Emerging Professionals: June Program Held, Nominations Deadlines Announced

Congratulations to the June 2021 class of Emerging Professionals (EPs). The latest program was held June 21-23 and developed participants’ leadership skills,  plus an in-depth understanding of the ASTM consensus process and consensus building. 

The June workshop participants, their affiliations, and committees, included:

• Joshua Hines, Engineered Materials Solutions, Nonferrous Metals and Alloys (B02);
• Guha Manogharan, Pennsyvania State University, Additive Manufacturing Technologies (F42);
• Miguel Montoya, Purdue University, Road and Paving Materials (D04);
• Mehdi Khanzadeh Moradllo, Temple University, Concrete and Concrete Aggregates (C09);
• Fredrick Mutua, Technical University of Kenya, Plastics (D20), Composite Materials (D30);
• Christopher Schall, Deatak Inc., Fire Standards (E05); and
• Gustavo Schinazi, IKO Industries, Roofing and Waterproofing (D08).

The EP program is currently scheduled to be held in person in the fall during committee weeks in Atlanta, Georgia. The workshop dates and nomination deadlines are as follows:

• Oct. 5: nominations due Aug. 23.
• Nov. 16: nominations due Oct. 4.

Candidates for the program should:

• Have one to five years’ experience in standards development or in using ASTM standards in their work; 
• Work for a company, association, or government agency that is currently using and/or developing ASTM standards, or attend a university (graduate level or higher) where their work involves/contributes to a significant ASTM activity; 
• Be available to attend an appropriate technical committee meeting; and 
• Be an ASTM International member or student member.

Student Project Grants

ASTM International offers $500 grants for university students to help with senior or graduate design projects that contain an ASTM standards component.

“These grants allow ASTM International to support students who are directly engaging with our standards in real-world scenarios as they work on capstone projects,” said Travis Murdock, academic outreach coordinator and staff manager at ASTM. “The goals of these innovative projects, from accessibility-focused technology to helmet safety, support what we strive to do every day: help the world work better.”

Students interested in applying for 2021 grants should submit an abstract, including:

• Summary of the project goal,
• List of ASTM International standards that are being considered to achieve that goal,
• Declaration of intent to submit an application paper for publication by ASTM International on completion of the project, and
• Statement of endorsement by a faculty member.

The deadline for submissions is Oct. 31. .

Professor of the Year Nominations Requested

Nominations are now being accepted for ASTM International’s 2021 Professor of the Year award. The award, given every other year, recognizes and rewards the contributions of educators in developing a broader understanding of standards. A cash award is given to the winning educator and their university. The deadline for nominations is Aug. 31.
