ASTM Staff and Members Attend Colombia Events
ASTM International staff and members attended the Asociación Colombiana de Productores de Concreto (ASOCRETO) RC2012 event, which was held Sept. 19-21, 2012, in Cartagena, Colombia. The RC event, which is held every two years, brings together top international representatives from the concrete industry to share experience and knowledge. ASTM members Cesar Constantino, Titan America LLC, Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Ronald Thornton, Delta Engineering, Endicott, N.Y., participated in various meetings related to international concrete and cement standards. Constantino and Thornton also presented on topics relating to sustainability and projects involving ASTM standards used in construction.
Prior to RC2012, Scott Orthey, manager, ASTM technical committee operations, and Vanessa Corona, a representative from ASTM's Mexico office, met with the following in Bogota, Colombia:
- Instituto Colombiano de Normas Técnicas y Certificación (ICONTEC), Colombia's national standards body, which has had a memorandum of understanding with ASTM since 2001;
- Professors Daniel Paez, Juan Pablo Bocarejo and Julian Andres Gomes of the Universidad de Los Andes;
- Julio Carbó, commercial specialist at the U.S. Commercial Service, U.S. Embassy;
- Jaime Niebles and Leonardo Lujan at Colombia's Ministry of National Defense; and
- Christina Gamboa, CEO of the Colombia Green Building Council.
Common themes included participation by these organizations on ASTM technical committees as well as cooperation in global initiatives in specific standards areas, and new directions in environmental sustainability. Each of these organizations was invited to join a delegation from Colombia led by the Federación Iberoamericana del Hormigón Premezclado to the December 2012 committee week in Atlanta, Ga.
