New Test Method for Additive Manufacturing of Metals – Test Methods – Standard Test Method for Characterization of Process Gas Flow In-Situ Laser-Based Powder Bed Fusion Systems
1. Scope
1. Scope
1.1 In addition to preventing oxidation during the powder melting cycle of PBF-LB/M, the process gas flow evacuates the chamber of condensate that is produced during the laser beam and powder interaction. This test method provides the apparatus and procedure to accurately measure the process gas flow in the most critical areas inside the build chamber.
1.2 This test method can be used to compare process gas flow characteristics from machine to machine and between machine brands.
1.3 This test method does not set any process gas flow requirements.
1.4 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Rationale
Laser-based metal powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) machines use a process shielding gas inside the build chamber to prevent oxidation during the laser beam and powder interaction. The flow characteristics of the process gas flow are a critical key process variable, yet there is no standardized method to determine the quality of gas flow inside the machine build chamber. This test method establishes the apparatus and procedures for accurate characterization of process gas flow in-situ the machine build chamber.
