ASTM WK99108
The current standard presents “space factor” and “stacking factor” in parentheses following “lamination factor.” While these terms are technically equivalent, each is more commonly used in different industrial sectors. Separating these terms and providing individual definitions for each would improve clarity, enhance usability across industries, and reduce potential ambiguity in interpretation. According to the ASTM Blue Book (Section E2), when a term appears in multiple standards with the same definition, it is considered a general definition of a term, rather than one specific to a particular standard. The term “sheet specimen” appears in the specific terminology sections of A804/A804M, A932/A932M and A1036-04(2020) with identical definitions. The terms “recoil permeability”, “reversible temperature coefficients”, and “the maximum recommended working temperature” appear in the specific terminology sections of A1054, A1070, A1101, and A1102 with identical definitions. Adding these terms to A340 would consolidate commonly used terminology into a single, authoritative source, consistent with the intent of Section E2. This would reduce redundancy across individual standards, promote consistency in terminology usage, and improve accessibility for users who rely on multiple ASTM documents.
