Rationale

The particle size analysis of asphalt emulsions is indicative of the quality or performance of the emulsion, however the measurement technologies, equipment, and techniques can greatly influence the reported sizes of binder droplets asphalt emulsion. To better standardize the methods by which asphalt emulsion particle size is measured and discussed, a method to measure and report particle size is desired for increased industry and academic collaboration on the nature and applications of particle size in asphalt emulsions. Particle size analysis is becoming more widely used for asphalt emulsions, but there is not consensus on the methods used to measure and report it, making particle size difficult to compare outside of work localized within specific industry or academic groups. It is recommended that the method be provided for better industry-wide understanding and engagement.
