New Practice for Micro-extraction of asphalt binder from asphalt mixtures
1. Scope
In lieu of new EPA regulations limiting the use of chlorinated solvents, there is a need to unify practices for extracting small amounts of asphalt binder from plant/lab/field mixes or recycled materials for the purpose of binder characterization. This proposed standard will provide guidance for performing micro-extractions of up to 10 g of asphalt binder.
Keywords
micro-extraction; asphalt binder
Rationale
A new standard is needed due to new EPA regulations making current practices more difficult. The new standard will streamline asphalt binder rheological and chemical testing when extraction is performed and will improve safety. Users are contractors, transportation agencies, testing labs, and researchers.
