The authors of the standard imposed vacuum melting on the initial melt while allowing for either VAR or ESR as the second melt. It is unknown if the initial vacuum melt is essential by the industry today. This ballot to see if there is technical support to allow for an airmelt option so long as the material subsequently undergoes at least one vacuum melt.
