Rationale

This ballot proposes to add ASTM D8267 Standard Test Method for Determination of Total Aromatic, Monoaromatic and Diaromatic Content of Aviation Turbine Fuels Using Gas Chromatography with Vacuum Ultraviolet Absorption Spectroscopy Detection (GC-VUV) to TABLE 1 Detailed Requirements of Aviation Turbine Fuels and to Section 11.1.16 ASTM D8267 is already in D1655 Table 1 as a method for total aromatics, vol%. The total aromatics value is a summation of monoaromatics and diaromatics as determined by the D8267 test method. D8267 includes precision (r &R) for total aromatics, monoaromatics and diaromatics. This ballot proposes to add the naphthalenes determination as an alternate to ASTM D1840. Supporting documentation “A Study of Naphthalenes Measurement Techniques” report is attached. Note that the terminology of naphthalenes versus diaromatics versus polyaromatics, in the context of jet fuel analysis, are essentially the same. The original motion to ballot was approved by the Subcommittee D02.J at the Dec 2020 meeting. Balloted as D02.J0 (22-05) Item 001. Item was withdrawn to address persuasive negative. The motion to ballot again was approved at the December 2025 ASTM meeting in Houston, TX.
