ASTM WK98065
In recent years, there has been an increase of attractions implementing various head-worn accessories, including VR/AR head mounted displays that are placed on the faces of guests for prolonged periods of times. Studies have demonstrated that headsets subjected to extended use are colonized by high levels of bacterial contaminants, some of which can cause serious infections. Without proper disinfecting techniques, VR/AR headsets can pose a potential health hazard for their users. A standard is needed to ensure the spread of these bacteria is limited. To accomplish this, it is important for the manufacturer of these types of attractions to provide products that have the ability to be cleaned and disinfected and also important for the owner/operator to ensure that when these accessories are shared between guests, approved hygiene procedures are implemented. Our Task Group recommends the requirement of cleaning head mounted accessories in F770, how to clean them in F1193, and the design of these components to allow them to be cleaned in F2291. Ballots have been passed for F1193 and F2291. This Work Item is to add an Appendix that references industry disinfection best practices to F770.
