ASTM WK97947
The definitions presented reflect both current scientific understanding and how the terms are used in common parlance. The definitions are intended to provide clarity for licensed operations, consumers, and regulatory authorities who interact with these materials. Manufacturers of terpenes and terpene blends can use the terms defined in this standard to accurately describe the non-cannabinoid products they handle and produce. Producers of cannabinoid and non-cannabinoid products incorporating terpenes and terpene blends can use the terms defined in this standard to accurately describe the non-cannabinoid ingredients used to make products. Regulatory agencies can use the terms defined in this standard to inform regulation related to terpene and terpene blends used to make products within their jurisdictions. While most of the input for this standard did come from North America, an effort was made to solicit as much feedback from impacted global marketplaces as possible. This standard is only the beginning and attempts to address a major gap regarding harmonized terminology related to terpenes. Please remember that ASTM International standards are living documents and are intended to be updated and revised over time. This initial version will not be perfect, but it will serve to provide marketplaces with a strong foundation.
