Rationale

Use of terpene-based solvents is common practice for cases where only asphalt content and extracted aggregate gradation are being determined, yet D2172/D2172M does not currently permit its use like AASHTO T 164 does. The purpose of this work item is to revise D2172/D2172M to add terpene-based solvent as an allowed solvent to harmonize with AASHTO T 164 and include appropriate language stating state reagent grade solvents are to be used in cases where asphalt binder is to be recovered and tested.
