ASTM WK97651
Transverse (shear) ultrasonic waves have been used to obtain ultrasonic pulse velocity for many years now. At the moment ASTM C597 only refers to longitudinal (compression) waves, which leaves use of transverse ultrasonic waves uncovered by this standard. Transverse ultrasonic wave velocity is required for non-destructive measurement of elastic modulus. Transverse wave velocities are also less affected by environmental conditions like saturation levels. Including transverse ultrasonic waves in C597 will allow users to leverage the advantages of transverse waves when making ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements. Notation in Equation 1 also needs to be revised to address a negative vote on a subcommittee ballot. This work item is to address these two points.
