ASTM WK96993
Fractures of tibial insert posts, although rare, have been reported in the literature. Particularly with the advent of crosslinked inserts in knee replacements to decrease wear, there can be a subsequent decrease in material properties. A new posterior-stabilized (PS) insert design should be assessed to minimize the risk of in vivo post fracture. While this can be done virtually through design controls, and simulations, a mechanical fatigue test is useful to simulate potential real world worst-case scenarios which the post could experience.
